*It takes 80-100 years for an aluminum can to decompose (break down) in a landfill.
*Aluminum cans can be recycled into: soda cans, pie plates, license plates, thumbtacks, aluminum foil, and many other items.
*Recycling one aluminum can can save enough energy to power a tv for up to three hours!
*In the year 2000, 13,500 aluminum cans were recycled every minute in California.
*Glass takes over 1,000,000 (one million) years to decompose in a landfill. (So be sure to recycle these ones)
*Glass can be recycled into jars, jewelry, bottles, dishes, drinking glasses, coffee mugs and many other items.
*It can take up to 700 years for plastic to decompose (break down) in a landfill.
*PET plastic can be recycled into: clothing, fiberfill for sleeping bags, toys, stuffed animals, rulers and more.

Wow....that's pretty crazy! All those facts sure make me want to recyle more...to think how much stuff is put in garbage when it can just be reused.

Okay, I have a question for you. I've heard that many things we put in the recycling bin actually end up in landfills too. Is that true? Which materials are the most likely to be easily recycled and really help our environment? Paper? Glass? I want to be better about recycling, but I also want to make sure that it really will be worth the effort.
Thanks for this information Kaely. It's good to know that there are some things you can't recycle, like pizza boxes and plastic bags. Now I can do a better job of only putting the right types of things in the recycling bin!

So yesterday I was watching Wall-E actually with a friend. That's what I thought of when I read how LONG it takes all those things to decompose!! Wow. So, I want to do better - even as a college student. I know I throw away a lot, because I don't know where to recycle. .. So my question is - What can I do? I'm an average person who wants to do better. Should I look online for a recycle center or go somewhere in Provo? How can an average person (who doesn't have the green bins on the curb) still recycle as much as possible?

I moved here from San Diego where is it almost required to recycle since they have so many people there and not enough landfill area.
However, even though I've been recycling religiously for 15 years, I still learned a few things! Thanks for your complete research on the topic. Now I know not to ever put plastic bags in the recycle bin...I thought they melted them down to reform bags since the stores were taking them. Oops, should've researched 1st!

Nice! We've recycled for quite some time. I have two things to point out or ask. It has been hard to find a place to recycle the long fluorescent tubes, and I think more people need to be made aware of the need to recycle them, as well as where they can take them and how much it would cost. Would you put that information on your blog?
Also, I'd like to know, in this state of limited water, if there are any studies showing how much water is used to clean a can so that it can be recycled, maybe something like a dog food can. I'm wondering what the relative costs are--water usage (that we can't afford) vs. landfill space.
I researched where I could recycle things that was close to where I live, and I found a recycle drop-off box that is only a few minutes away! They take all kinds of stuff. I was glad we could recycle a bunch of magazines that we were about to throw away. After reading about how long it takes an aluminum can to decompose (and that recycling one can power a TV for 3 hours!), that's going to be my next step - trying to save my aluminum cans to get recycled.
